INSET Training for Schools

I am a highly experienced trainer and consultant and I can offer enjoyable INSET training for special schools and mainstream schools. My training is underpinned by the principles of social learning which ensures a valuable learning experience for staff members at every level of experience and education. I offer sessions in the following skills:

Intensive Interaction and Rapport-based communication

This session will involve presentation, video examples, group discussion and social learning games to introduce the principles of intensive interaction and rapport-based communication.  I have unique experience in the long-term development of the Intensive Interaction provision in primary and secondary special schools and adult services and I have created an accessible rapport-based approach that is designed to support practitioners at all levels of experience and education. Group discussions will cover issues such as a) knowing which behaviours to join in with, b) implementing the practice intentionally as part of a team and c) how to support people who are in distress.

On completing this session, delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the 3C’s of rapport based communication and will be able to apply this principle to find more rapport with the people they support.

  • Demonstrate understanding of the underpinning principles of Intensive Interaction.

  • Demonstrate understanding of the nature of rapport and the importance of rapport in high quality care and education.

Rapport-Based Musical Interaction

This enjoyable session of music making, singing and social learning activities will introduce delegates to a music practice that is underpinned by the principles of Intensive Interaction and Rapport-based Communication and is relevant in early years and SEND contexts.  On completing this session delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of Rapport-Based Music and how this practice helps practitioners to build relationships with young people.

  • Lead or support music sessions using an 8 song repertoire of interactive songs

  • Use the practice to engage the whole class, small group or one-to-one situations

  • Understand why the practice improves the wellbeing of children with additional needs (autism, learning disabilities etc)

  • Use supporting materials including video backing tracks and PDF handbook to support their practice

Play and Communication

This enjoyable session will expand upon the principles of Intensive Interaction to investigate how staff can use objects, props, toys, activities and games to find rapport and build relationships with the people they support.  Through a series of games and social learning activities, staff will learn about the principles of play and how to become more playful people in order to make more connections with service users.  Theory covered will include social pedagogy and playwork principles.  The session will end with a short musical interaction session.

Understanding Needs and Behaviour

In this insightful session delegates will have the opportunity to use reflective practice to analyse a situation that involved behaviour that they found difficult to support.  On completing this session delegates will be able to.

  • Demonstrate understanding of a four step process to help understand the needs of the person they support.

  • Devise new strategies to meet the needs of the person they support.

  • Engage with other staff members to devise new team strategies

  • Repeat the reflective practice process for future difficult situations.
