Over a period of 10 years of supporting staff working in challenging circumstance supporting people with complex needs. I have developed a straightforward reflective practice session to teach staff how to find the unmet needs that cause behaviour and develop new strategies to creatively meet these needs. This training teaches two ways to understand needs, Non-violent communication and self determination theory.
Non-violent communication is an established approach to conflict resolution, developed by Marshall Rosenburg, an American psychologist. By going beyond right and wrong and removing the unnoticed judgements from our speech, it is possible to learn how to communicate in a way that helps to ascertain the unmet needs that are causing a person's behaviour and also to help other people to hear what you need too.
Self Determination Theory is a well researched theory of how fundamental psychological needs must be fulfilled for wellbeing and growth. The theory is used to underpin the approach of Rapport-based communication. The workshop is facilitated by Matt Laurie. Matt has worked in the care and education sector for 20 years and has developed this training session while helping people working in the most challenging circumstances to avoid burnout and transform their situation. He is known for his clear, fresh and inspiring approach to training.
The training is presented in clear and plain language and is suitable for staff from all cultural background and levels of education and experience. The training is particularly valuable for:
- Family members who want to understand how to resolve conflict positively
- Care workers who want to understand distress behaviours that are challenging to support
- Managers and staff members who want to understand how to resolve difficult working relationships
