Rhythmic Relating and Rapport-Based Communication

In June 2022 I was emailed by Stuart Daniel, an experienced play therapist and Intensive Interaction practitioner, who expressed an interest in my work on rapport-based communication and musical interaction. This initial interest evolved into a collaboration to write a paper developing the approach of Rhythmic Relating in Autism, a fascinating way to supporting autistic people through the sensitive use of social timing.

Stuart was particularly interested in the accessible language I have developed around rapport and he recognised the value of these principles, particularly when trying to communicate the deeper underpinning concepts in a straightforward and practical way. Our new paper, written in collaboration with a third contributor, Jonathon Delafield-Butt, is called ‘A Handbook of Rhythmic Relating’, and features rapport and the three c’s as central principles underpinning the deeper practice. We are very happy that the paper has been peer-reviewed and published this month.
